The Black Basilisk Circus
An agile showman with a reputation for defeating opponents with his bare hands.
Mako grew up watching the travelling carnival shows that came through the city. With his family involved in trades he did care to follow, he jumped at the chance to join up when a locally-based carnival started up. With skills in martial arts and limning, he worked for the promoter performing in staged exhibition combat matches as well as creating posters and flyers to advertise. As the circus was dismantled by the city guard, Mako found himself out on the street. Not wanting to crawl back home, he stuck with the survivors to found an adventuring group looking for answers. He’s out to prove that stage combat isn’t as fake as it seems.
Mako’s fighting style displays the same contrasts as his personality. On one hand, he moves with a possessed speed, showing off with an eye-popping array of brawling combinations, flashy kicks, and evasive slips, turns, and leaps. This earned him the stage moniker of “The Northern Devil.” Away from the ring, Mako attunes his movements to a fluid grace, practicing hypnotic forms that can cause opponents to stumble. A compassionate fighter at heart, Mako tries his best to subdue his enemies if possible without causing permanent harm.
Standing only at average height, Mako’s toned physique nonetheless speaks of an intense training regimen. His short-cropped raven hair is often spiked up for performances. Mako dresses in bright coloured costumes with ornamental headbands and scarves to add to the show. Even since turning to adventuring, he keeps to some of his theatrical attire.
Why do we fight? Punch and kick at shadows until we are breathless?
I forget where I am. My heart is pounding faster than it should as if trying to escape my chest. This familiar feeling of sinking, of slipping.
You fight… because you think it satiates something within you. It’s not a fear or grief that shapes you…
But this time it is different. I think my eyes are open, though I see nothing but the white. The snowflakes seem to slow in their descent, then pause altogether.
It’s anger. It’s always been anger. That perhaps those fists are only to drive things away…
My breath spirals out before me. Somewhere in the distance, I hear a hungry ghost howling. I’ve been through the sacred temples and the bloodied gyms, chased it through the mystic and the mundane.
To push aside the things you know are true?
But I’ve known it all my life. I strike a stance in full gear, all flash and steel and devil horns. My feet shift in the snow as I stare down my foes. The psychic voices echoing in my head are stilled, the calm belies the fire inside. My state of mind becomes my armor.
You aren’t ready.
My name is Mako Mirage, now portraying “The Northern Devil.”
And I will be ready.
